Alexa for Canvas

Alexa for Canvas

Overview

Brief
Canvas is a dashboard tracked by Vice Presidents and Senior Managers (Team: Release Engineering) at T-Mobile to check the key performance indicators over a period of time. During releases, Canvas plays a crucial role in alerting management in case of trouble. The voice skill aides as an extension of canvas.

Impact
Successful completion of a pilot project for VUI. Resulted in Client buy-in to experiment with other stakeholders for the product.

Role
I worked as the Product Designer alongside the Creative Director and a Developer to create the concept, design the interactions, build the database of intents, utterances, and slots.

User Problem

Users are required to be on call throughout the night of product release and it causes a lot of stress as it requires constant data monitoring by logging into the dashboard every few hours.

How can a Voice Interface help elevate the product experience?

  • An average voice search loads in 4.6 seconds, which is 52% faster than the average page

  • Quick access to information without log-in or tracking

  • Simple, easy to consume bits of information

  • Alerts to notify user about issues requiring attention as opposed to the user logging in periodically to assess status

  • Seamless extension continuing the web experience of the Canvas Dashboard

  • Accessible tool for C-Suite execs who want to be in the loop about the status of the release

Anatomy of Voice UI

  • Wake word - “Alexa” / “Ok Google” / “Hey Siri”

  • Intent - User Goal. Ex: To get updates about Canvas

  • Utterance - Phrases to help the user achieve their intent

  • Slot - Variable spots in utterances for variable context. Ex: Names/Dates

The Backstory

Facets of Voice UI

Scope

  • Get Summary/Highlights

  • Get details about a KPI

  • Email reports to self

  • Help (Stuck or Getting Started)

Consumable Bites of Information

  • Level 1 - Dashboard Highlights
Status of Release - Events planned, defects, applications released and applications pre-deployed

  • Level 2 - KPI Detail
    Defects by count and severity

Asking for Information

Users can ask Alexa for some basic information about metrics from their Canvas Dashboard

Entries and Exits

With VUI, it was very crucial to plan the different ways a user might exit the application and design ways to gracefully exit.

Proof of Concept

The stakeholders for this product was the Vice-President and Senior Managers for the Release Engineering Team at T-Mobile. Their busy schedule provided a great opportunity to create impact that was simple to design but added a lot of value. The requirement guided us to design for information that can be consumed via audio. I brainstormed and ideated the potential user flows, prototyping them to create buy-in with the client and showcase the potential of using a voice interface for Canvas.
