Brief
Cloud IAM is a self-serviced portal to set up roles with specific permissions. The role can then be assigned to specific members or groups to moderate access.

Role
I worked as the Product Designer with a Developer and Visual Designer from the in-house team. On the client side, we worked with a Product Owner, and a Product Manager.

My role involved understanding the steps involved in creating a role and designing an intuitive experience for it.

User Problem

Users often abandoned creating a role mid-way as the process had complicated and interdependent content, and was unengaging.

Progressive Disclosure

Since role creation is a complex and interdependent, the wizard style set up to broke up the role creation process. This made the content consumable and I could ensure progressive disclosure of information so user is not overwhelmed

Simplifying the language

The complex language around the functionality of this application created an entry barrier. Giving the user more context and making the language more inviting and conversational helped make the design intuitive.

Prompts

Another user problem I identified was that users did not know why they had to give this information and how it affected the role they were creating. So I designed a space to visualize and give some hints to the user about how this nugget of information played a part in the role creation process.

Clarity in Selection

Key part of role creation process is selecting a list of entities that the role could have access to. Showing the user clearly what entities they were choosing was integral to the user’s experience.

Features introduced to add clarity:

1. Search through the permission list

2. Accordion Style cards for progressive disclosure

3. Option to expand all cards at once

4. Indication on how many sub elements are selected

5. Option to filter only selected elements

6. Option to select all sub elements at once
