Amazon Instant Video
Overview
Brief
An exponentially high volume of errors were identified for the assets created for Amazon Instant Video (eventually rebranded to Amazon Prime). The requirement was to assess what was causing the quality issues and implement solutions as soon as possible due to the high impact and visibility of the product. An ad-hoc Quality Assessment team was assembled to achieve the goal
Impact:
Lowered the error rate from 75% to 14% within 4 weeks.
Role:
I worked as a Quality Audit lead with another designer, managing a team of 14 junior designers over a period of 16 weeks. We got to explore the responsibilities of planning a strategy to achieve our goal (lower error rate), pivoting and executing when challenges arose and keeping the team motivated and engaged.
Course of Action
Identify frequent mistakes
Run problem specific training modules
Reduce volume of errors
Train new designers and replacements
Assess strengths and weaknesses of the designers
Project Log
Tracking and Assessment
Volume reports at regular intervals helped us track our progress and audit reports helped us analyze repetitive mistakes which could be avoided. This also helped us identify patterns which were addressed in training sessions. The training documents were useful to train new designers and replacements.

Result
At the end of June, 16 weeks into the project the error count was lowered to 14%. The assets were not created to be responsive or didn’t take into consideration the viewport size which was a key factor that affected quality. Identifying this detail helped us structure feedback and subsequent training to reduce the error rate.
